Traditional Metal Braces in Rocky Point, NY

TIME-TESTED, PROVEN RESULTS

What are Metal Braces?

Metal braces are the most widely used orthodontic treatment in the world, and for good reason. They use a system of stainless steel brackets bonded to each tooth, connected by a wire that applies gentle, continuous pressure to guide your teeth into the right position over time.

While newer options like clear aligners work well for certain cases, metal braces remain the most versatile and reliable tool for treating a wide range of alignment and bite issues. Dr. Miller uses modern, low-profile brackets that are smaller and more comfortable than what most people picture when they think of braces.

How Metal Braces Work

Metal braces use brackets, wires, and elastic bands to apply steady pressure to your teeth over time. Each bracket is bonded directly to the surface of a tooth, and a thin archwire connects them all together. As Dr. Miller adjusts the wire at each visit, your teeth gradually shift into their correct positions.

Appointments are typically scheduled every four to six weeks for adjustments. During each visit, Dr. Miller checks your progress, swaps out wires or bands as needed, and makes sure treatment is tracking on schedule. Most patients are in treatment for 12 to 24 months depending on the complexity of their case.

Metal braces can correct a wider range of orthodontic issues than most other treatment options, including severe crowding, significant bite problems, and complex tooth rotations that aligners may not be able to handle on their own.

Why Patients Still Choose Metal Braces

With so many orthodontic options available, metal braces remain the go-to for a reason. They work around the clock without relying on patient compliance, they handle complex cases that other treatments can’t, and they consistently deliver predictable results. For many patients, they’re simply the most efficient path to a great outcome.

Who is a Good Candidate for Metal Braces?

Metal braces work for patients of all ages, from children and teens to adults. They’re especially well-suited for complex cases involving severe crowding, deep bites, underbites, crossbites, or teeth that need significant rotation.

They’re also a great option for patients who don’t want the responsibility of removing and tracking clear aligners throughout the day. Since metal braces are fixed in place, they do the work without requiring any extra effort on your part between appointments.

If you’re not sure which treatment is right for your situation, Dr. Miller will walk you through all of your options during a complimentary consultation and help you find the approach that makes the most sense for your specific case.

Questions? We've got answers

Answers to the questions we hear most from new patients, from cost and comfort to what treatment is really like.

Do metal braces hurt?

There's usually some soreness for the first few days after they're placed and for a day or two after each adjustment. It's more of a dull pressure than sharp pain, and most patients manage it easily with over-the-counter pain relief. The discomfort fades quickly as your teeth adjust.

Are metal braces still a good option for adults?

Most patients are in treatment for 12 to 24 months depending on the complexity of their case. Dr. Miller will give you a realistic timeline during your consultation so you know what to expect before treatment begins.

How long does treatment with metal braces take?

Are there foods I need to avoid?

Yes, you'll want to steer clear of hard, sticky, and crunchy foods that could damage the brackets or wires. Things like popcorn, hard candy, caramel, and ice are the usual culprits. Dr. Miller's team will give you a full list when your braces are placed.

How much do metal braces cost?

Cost varies depending on the length and complexity of treatment. Metal braces are often the most affordable orthodontic option. We work with most major insurance plans and offer flexible monthly payments for patients without coverage. Your consultation includes a full cost breakdown.

What happens after my braces come off?

You'll wear a retainer to keep your teeth in their new position. Dr. Miller will go over your retainer plan before your braces are removed so you know exactly what to expect. Most patients wear a retainer full-time at first, then transition to nights only.
